This story of love and immigration vibrates with autobiographical authenticity. A young Romanian couple arrives, in the late seventies, in New York. Lydia and Nicki are political refugees. Their memories create a rich picture of their old country for the American reader. Communist Romania under dictator Ceausescu is contrasted to the culture shock they experience in the megalopolis. Alienated and homesick, disappointed by their sponsor, overpowered by the stone canyons of Manhattan, Lydia discovers she is pregnant. Her relationship with Nicki is tested, as he wonders if the baby will take away his freedom to fully explore and enjoy America, the country of his dreams. They had severed bonds to country, family and friends to be free. Now they only have each other. As they mature, as they make new friends and discover new horizons, Lydia and Nicki's story turns out to be a real tale with a happy ending.
