1940: The War is not going well. City children are to be evacuated to the safety of the British countryside, a mammoth task to ensure future generations might blossom. For most, the upheaval will be an enlightenment, perhaps an education; for a minority, less pleasant, abusive even. For a select few, it could prove to be a life-changing adventure . . . Identical twin sisters, Penny and Polly; a sturdy lad, Tom, and his younger brother, Ernie, with a mute refugee named Ben, are destined to end up billeted together in the grand manor house of Lord Montford, with his housekeeper, Mrs Jolly, and his granddaughter, Evangeline. The rural village of Spirecross, with a new airfield under construction on Top Meadow, might just hold more than enough surprises to test their metal.
