Contributor Bio:  Linton, William James Der englische Maler und Illustrator Walter Crane (1845 - 1915) war einer der fuhrenden Kopfe der Bewegung Arts and Crafts, die die Wiederbelebung der Kunst durch ihre handwerklichen Grundlagen anstrebte. Als Dreizehnjahriger hatte er mit einer Serie von Zeichnungen die Aufmerksamkeit des Graveurs von Holzstichen William James Linton gewonnen, der eine eigene Druckpresse besass. Crane trat bei Linton in die Lehre, der ihn mit anspruchsvollen Aufgaben forderte und ihm die Geschichte der Grafik, darunter die Meister der italienischen Renaissance, nahe brachte. In Zusammenarbeit mit dem Drucker Edmund Evans, der sich der Weiterentwicklung des Farbdrucks verschrieben hatte, und dem Verleger George Routledge schuf Crane eine Fulle von prachtigen und fein nuancierten Buchillustrationen, die sein Werk rasch popular machten.
