In 1930s Berlin, a teenage German boy falls in love with a teenage Jewish girl. Despite everything the world is about to throw at them, they are determined they will stay together. But what if fate also determines that he will become a guard in the extermination camp that she will be sent to? It is 1999 in the heart of England. The new Millennium is just around the corner but Harry Simpson doesn't feel he has much to look forward to: his parents have separated, he is being bullied in his new school; life could be better... much better. But then he finds allies in two unlikely sources: Maggie McGuire, a feisty girl in his class, and William and Gabriel, two elderly neighbours who live nearby.
