Remarks of a Philosopher

This is a searching and free-wheeling book dedicated to Christopher Columbus, who crossed an unknown ocean, held together a mutinous crew, and gave to the world a brand-new hemisphere for its lasting benefit. That which drove Columbus to seek things in the outer world has driven me to seek things inwardly. If in this book I show myself to be the kind of writer who endorses a romantic cult of the fragment, a kind-hearted reader could at least pick the most wisdom-filled fragments to judge me.
