Coming of age in the 50s Connor Kelman leaves high school determined to see his name in lights. Donny and the Hot Rods find a label for "Running Nowhere," and go on tour. The ghost of Red Nolan, Gabbie the guitar, and high school girlfriend Eleanor go with him. Conor's fan base builds, and so do stress and tension. One fan leaves a mark that makes him tremble with fear. The band's driver shows Conor how to survive tight schedules, late nights and life on the road. Soon, Conor depends on the driver as much as the addictive drugs; he turns to him for protection from the crazed fan that follows him. Conor swears that he sees the driver with the fan, but is convinced that it's imagination.

He learns more about the driver than he wants to know, but can he get by without him? Too late, he discovers the deadly scheme behind the driver's friendship, and his life turns upside down.
Conor returns to Idaho at both his mother's request to visit his ill father, and his producer's advice to take a break from Nashville. He finds comfort in familiar surroundings and old friends. He wanted something to call his own since a child. Had he left the very place that held what he searched?

In the end, he must choose between music and the girl that loves him--or the little white house in the orchard and a girl that brings pleasant memories.
