George Preston, a bored graduate student, opens a door in his apartment and finds himself looking into another world, at a city street that seems both retro and futuristic. He hesitates, then steps through the doorway. Turning around, he sees that the world he knows is gone. Soon after this, he meets a man named Sullok, who shoots him, and he is suddenly in a different world. This one is based, impossibly, on a 90s television show involving aliens, conspiracies, and the supernatural. He again encounters Sullok, though the man is no longer using that name. Wanting revenge, George grabs a gun and shoots him. With that, George is in a new world, this one based, even more absurdly, on a television commercial.
