Leviathan
Thomas Hobbes
Leviathan was written by Thomas Hobbes during the English Civil War and was originally published in 1651. The political philosophy book derives its name from the biblical Leviathan and the politics & social sciences work concerns the structure of society and legitimate government. Leviathan argues for a social contract and rule by an absolute sovereign. Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan is regarded as one of the earliest and most influential examples of social contract theory and it ranks as a political philosophy classic western work on statecraft, comparable to Machiavelli's The Prince. Thomas Hobbes' Leviathan is often required textbook reading for various courses in politics & social sciences, philosophy, political philosophy, history, and politics & government.
