Real estate developer Doug Sutherland always considered himself lucky. A successful career, good health, a loving mate, and a bright future. But his karma is tested when two assassins kill Sutherland's good friend, a journalist who is about to expose a drug company's corrupt practices. An innocent bet places Sutherland at the murder scene, face-to-face with the hitmen. He kills one of the attackers, and the man's criminal family seek revenge. Sutherland commits himself to complete his friend's investigation, publish the story, and avenge the reporter's death. But first, he must fend off several more murder attempts, deflect a federal agent's suspicion, and protect a Cuban defector, one of the reporter's sources.
