James Mercer, a gifted young chemist, finds himself thrust into the middle of a vicious insurgency in the war-torn country of Coren after being wrongly accused of trying to assassinate the nation's leader, Dr. Johnathan Nightrick. In exchange for protection, James is made to begin producing chemical weapons for the very rebels who framed him in the first place. On the run and out of options, he bides his time while planning his escape to the West, where he believes freedom and peace await him.

However, as his weapons make their way onto the battlefield, he once again catches the eye of Dr. Nightrick, who starts to wonder if James, far from being an enemy, might just be the key to ending the war once and for all. Caught between a brutal regime and a radical insurgency both hell-bent on claiming him as their own, James must confront the true cost of freedom and help set the course of the earth-shattering conflict that will decide the future of his people.
