Secondary Numeracy Project: Students' Perceptions of the Secondary Numeracy Project

Always mathemaatics have been a very challenging subject for a majority of students. Mathematics educators have been trying to explore effective classroom learning environments to teach the subject successfully. The Numeracy Development Project intiated by the Government of New Zealand in the year 2001 was one such project to improve students' achievement in mathematics for primary children. The three key features of this project are the research-base approach, number framework and ongoing professional development for teachers. This project was very successful. Hence the project was introduced to intermediate schools and then in secondary schools in 2006 as the Secondary Numeracy Project (SNP). This book explores the perceptions and experiences of some students in two secondary schools of New Zealand. The main focus was on four areas of mathematics learning: group work, use of manipulatives, communication and teachers. This book would help mathematics educators and teachers when trying to introduce new teaching styles for secondary students; what are students' expectations and their attitude towards introducing these new ideas.
