Remediation of Dioxins Contaminated Soil and Fly Ash: Thermal Remediation by Zone Combustion Process
Takashi Nakamura
Dioxins are environmental pollutant and classified as highly toxic polychlorinated aromatic compounds (PCAs) group. The sources of their release into environment are identified such as from uncontrolled waste incineration, some metallurgical processes and many industrial activities. In our environment, dioxins may be found in soil, fly ash, sediment or even in food. Considering this, a novel thermal remediation technology, namely zone combustion process, of particulate or powder materials contaminated by dioxins are proposed. The process was developed to give an alternative technology for effective dioxin contaminated soil remediation with higher efficiency. Some phenomena related with remediation mechanism of zone combustion process were examined and verified experimentally. The analysis and discussion in the book should reveal understanding the effectiveness of process performance and the behavior of dioxins during remediation. The book will be of interest to industrialist, environmental and process engineer, engineering student and/or anyone who concern with their clean environment.
