Intracapsular Disorders of Tmj
Jeslin James
Temporo-mandibular disorders are frequent and wide spread in general population. The subject of TMJ pain and dysfunction is complex. The reliability of a complex joint such as that of the jaw is the result of a stable interaction of soft tissue and bony structures. In spite of its daily exposure to wear and tear, simple changes in the TMJ are rare. Trauma, internal derangement with conceivable sequel and inflammation are the most mutual forms of pathologic conditions. The real causal factors and correct diagnosis should be established in order to provide appropriate management. Signs and symptoms may be specific or nonspecific. The strong relationship between articular and muscular disorders makes accurate diagnosis difficult. Substantial improvements have been made in our diagnostic and imaging capabilities, and some treatment advances have been helpful in the long-term management of these common disorders. The general radiologist is frequently challenged to manage the diagnostic pathway and to provide a good basis for planning the proper therapeutic strategy.
