Soldier with Flower

Why does a soldier in an old painting wear a big yellow flower on his chest? And why does he look so unlike everyone else in the picture or, for that matter, in real life; why does he look so happy? A young musician who searches for meaning, his lawless friend, and the German miller's daughter are growing up in the years leading to the First World War in a multi-ethnic village in Austria-Hungary. Their search for the secret of the Soldier with Flower takes them on different paths through the harshness of both peace and war.
