Nanotechnology in the Space and Military Industries

Space is a key sector in the contemporary geopolitical board, especially for countries where a postmodern scientific paradigm has taken hold. By all appearances, we have already entered a new technological battle where artificial intelligence, cybernetics, space engineering, and nanotechnology are crucial for national security and military activities. These technologies will bring enormous progress to mankind in the area of space nanomedicine and for the development of novel nanomaterials to be used in exploration, scientific, commercial, and touristic activities in outer space. Nanomedicine can also be used in health care applications during spaceflight, e.g., targeted delivery of drugs and polymeric or colloidal nanoparticles via microchannels or micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMs) to counteract the effects of microgravity on the behavior of the organism and drugs administered traditionally. Nanotechnology-enhanced military uniforms can sense the soldier's health condition and broadcast the data to the command center, where it can be related to the overall battlefield status using Big Data. This review summarizes some of the applications and trends in nanotechnology for aerospace medicine and the military sector.
