Macbeth

In 1603, James VI of Scotland ascended the English throne, becoming James I of England. A brave Scottish general named Macbeth receives a prophecy from a trio of witches that one day he will become King of Scotland. Consumed by ambition and spurred to action by his wife to kill, Macbeth murders King Duncan and takes the Scottish throne for himself. He is then wracked with guilt and paranoia. Like other plays by William Shakespeare, Macbeth speaks to each generation. Its story was once seen as that of a hero who commits an evil act and pays an enormous price. The line is blurred between Macbeth's evil and his opponents' good, and there are new attitudes toward both witchcraft, witches, wizards, treason and gender.
