Emma Jane Austen

Emma Emma is a comic novel written by Jane Austen, in English, first published in 1815 by publisher John Murray, about the dangers of misinterpreting romance. The main character, Emma Woodhouse, is described as "beautiful, smart and rich" but is also quite spoiled. Before starting the novel, Austen wrote, "I'm going to choose a heroine who, except me, won't like it very much." Emma's meaning comes from the meaning "Goddess of Love and Fertility." of "Goddess of Desire." Emma Woodhouse is a young woman in Regency England. He lives with his father, a hypochondriac characterized primarily by his over-concern for the health and well-being of those he loves. Miss Woodhouse is obstinate as a matchmaker of her friendships and relationships. But in dealing with the affairs of his friends he forgets to attend to his own feelings. Emma's friend and the only person who criticizes her is the gentleman Mr. Knightley, her "neighbor" and brother-in-law (brother of her sister's husband), sixteen years older than her, Miss Taylor, who was practically her friend and confidant, decides to get married, Emma is left alone in the face of her own feelings. Emma, paid for herself, believes the marriage is due to her, for having been the one who introduced Miss Taylor to her future husband, Mr. Weston. Emma faces a void in her life and a big dilemma: how to help others have a life as perfect as hers. Against Knightley's advice, she seeks out possible boyfriends for her new friend, Harriet Smith, a simple and modest young woman, far removed from the lifestyle of high society. She is a sweet 17-year-old girl, not very bright, described as "someone's natural daughter." He convinces her to reject an advantageous marriage with a respectable and young farmer, Mr. Martin, as Emma wants to pair her with the local vicar, Mr. Elton. His marriage intrigue goes wrong when it turns out that Mr. Elton, a social climber, wants to marry Emma himself. After Emma rejects his proposal, Mr. Elton goes on vacation. The irony he uses to give comedy to his novels makes Jane Austen considered one of the classics of the English novel, while its reception goes, even today, beyond the academic interest, his works being read by a wider audience.
