Publisher Marketing: In recent years, more and more books have been published on science in general and physics in particular. Yet I notice a curious gap. Each book focuses on only one or two of the following aspects of physics: history, biography, theory, methods, applications and social significance. I am not aware of any work that tries to give the reader a rounded picture, dealing with all of these topics in one book, in an integrated, comprehensive way. This book is intended to fill the gap; to teach the fundamental principles of physics in two volumes: "Classical Physics" and "Modern Physics." This, the first volume, covers the three most exciting areas of Classical Physics: Mechanics, Electrodynamics and Thermodynamics -- with a "Glimpse of the Future" chapter describing Einstein's Special Relativity Theory. The lives and significance of the principal scientists are summarized, non-mathematical explanations of basic concepts and fundamental laws are provided and consequences and applications discussed. For advanced readers, the "Next Level" chapter points the way for further study, using advanced high-school mathematics. The required math is summarized in the short "Your Math Toolkit" chapter just ahead of the "Next Level." Many of the results presented in the main body of the book are mathematically proven and some typical examples are calculated and solved there. Laymen, high-school and college students could all benefit from a book that gives them a birds-eye view of all aspects of the science of physics in a precise, fundamental and integrated way. I sure missed this kind of book myself, both as a student and as a teacher.
