There are over eight hundred billion metric tons of carbon in the atmosphere. The amount exchanged with the ocean and biosphere is around two hundred billion metric tons per year. The average carbon atom spends about four years in the atmosphere before going into the terrestrial biosphere or oceans. In this way, carbon is always in motion. It's the simplest example of this dynamic. The process is quite complex, but the basics are fairly straightforward.
