Sydney is a white, forty one-year-old lesbian who was born and raised in Dallas. She owns a lucrative real estate agency. Adrian, her African American partner, is a psychologist specializing in holistic medicine within the Dallas gay and lesbian community. Sydney receives a phone call from her great Aunt Belle's attorney in Slidesville, North Carolinain forming her that her aunt has died. Sydney has been left as executor of Belle's estate. While Sydney and Adrian are at Aunt Belle's house, the tail end of a hurricane sweeps through Slidesville. When Sydney goes out to check on the condition of the barn, she finds more than she bargained for. There mains of her Uncle Charley, who has been missing for 50 years, have washed to the surface. With Adrian's help, Sydney decides to try to learn more about the lives of Belle and Charley Denton and hopefully, how Charley ended up buried in his own barn. Sydney starts asking questions around town. She meets Lettie Ann Patterson, close friend and colleague of Belle's. It is with Lettie Ann that Sydney begins a spiraling journey into the real life story of the aunt she had mistakenly believed she knew quite well.
