As the blizzard intensifies, the electricitygoes off, leaving them to rely on kerosene lamps to get through the night. Saturday morning, they awake to an empty wood box, no food, and their teacherfeverishly ill with the flu. Serious as their predicament is, they manage tosurvive Saturday and Saturday night. However, Sunday morning they have to makea live or death decision. The book is filled with the workethics and ingenuity of children raised in rural communities during thenineteen-forties. The reader will be in suspense as Amos and his cousin Jesseescape one dangerous predicament after another in an effort to save theirfriends.
