For seven years the Corsicans were so cruel to the people of Flanders that the Flanderites established hiding places, for themselves, in the Vosges Mountains and in the surrounding caves and woods. Whenever the people of Flanders farmed, raised livestock, hunted, and fished the Corsicans would attack and plunder all that the Flanderites had accomplished. The Corsicans left the people of Flanders with nothing. Starvation, disease, and death became a daily way of life. The desolation and abuse was not what the Drol visualized or portrayed for the inhabitants of Flanders. He wanted correction and chastisement, not total devastation
