Disputed Road: a Novel K. L. Mcleod

A young woman attempts to separate dream from reality after she wakes up beside the cold, dead body of her husband. Her odd behavior following his death puts the local authorities on alert, and prompts her family to take away her two small children. Strong-willed with a fondness for the spirits ?the liquid kind, she finds herself confused, vulnerable, and detached from all that was once familiar. Suddenly she is prey to strangers and friends alike while her sanity wavers and threatens her very existence. Built at the dead end of Disputed Road, or 'road to hell' as some call it, Ava?s farmhouse is caught between two very different worlds. On one hand, there is Seaforth, a tiny town on the verge of extinction, home to her family and friends ?and Kade. On the other is Trenton, the metropolis across the lake, home to Officer Tom Stone, but Stone is not the only one interested in Ava and she is not nearly as alone as she imagines. When a stream of men, all seemingly tied to Ava, unexpectedly fall victim to untimely and brutal deaths, Sergeant Jim ?by the book? Fisher becomes suspicious? and frustrated, by both his rookie cop, Stone, and the languorous Seaforth Sheriff, who for their own clandestine reasons, compromise the investigation.
