50,000 BC, whether they took a temporary green passage through the Sahara, or created risky rafts to drift the nautical pass between Djibouti and Yemen, our ancient African ancestors left Africa. Their risk paid off as our ancestors were certainly equipped to handle life in Northern Africa, the Middle East and beyond, but distant cousins already mastered this feat hundreds of thousands of years before them. The clash between humans and Neanderthals was perhaps the greatest faceoff between two species in the history of the world.
