Tired of politics? So were the planners for the lunar base; the new start for humanity in which the best and brightest are intimately connected with each other through and with the main computer. Setting humanity's survival as an overriding priority frees them from the the distraction and endless debate of politics. Based on mathematical logic, the system, which is never wrong, is leading them toward abandoning the biological realm for cyber survival in a virtual world inside the computer from which this solution was conceived. Only two society outsiders end up questioning this, and stand in the way.

A professor of Art History for the now disbanded artiste colony, due to a provision in the Lunar base charter, has a legal claim to the land they want. Wondering what may be lost in the transition, he accepts an offer to see for himself in a trial run. Long fascinated by Ishi, the last Yahi, and seeing a similarity in their predicaments, he soon finds himself in the cyber Sierra Nevada, circa 1900. But the game is rigged with murderous intent.

A former nurse turned social scientist has inherited the caretaking job; monitoring the instruments and his inert body while he is away, and dealing with his moody resentment in between. She had accepted a liaison position between the Society and the Colony, extolling the wonders of the new way, but he blames her for the colony's disintegration. Is it just his raw charm and mystery that intrigues her, raising her own doubt in the system? If they can overcome their stormy past to come together and he can become Ishi enough to survive, they may discover human factors worth saving and the means of doing so, as well as guides to steer them into and through a future they cannot possibly imagine.
