When you know that the heart is deceitfully wicked, then it follows that the heart must be guarded with all your strength and might, with biblical care and zeal for the glory of God. But what about the details, those practical things that help us keep our hearts under control by the Holy Spirit and the Word of God? Well, there could be nobody more fit to offer us practical advice than the Puritans. They were renowned by the soundness of their theology and by the strength of their practical, holy lives. Among the Puritans, Flavel was known as the "theologian of the heart." And this book is a masterpiece of his theological genius. He opens with the doctrine of the heart and then goes into the practicalities of "keeping the heart" - the how, when, and why of guarding our hearts. You cannot put this book down once you start reading it. This book has been originally published in 1840. Current edition has been proofread, typeset for eBook readers, and slightly updated for modern readers. About the author: John Flavel (1327-1691) was an English Presbyterian clergyman, puritan, and author. He studied theology at University College in Oxford, England, and started his ministry in 1650 at Diptford, Avon. After the Act of Uniformity, he was ejected, but continued to preach in homes and private settings for some years. Flavel died at Exeter on June 26, 1691.
