Settled in 1630, Rensselaer's rich industrial heritage dates back to 1632, when a local gristmill became the first industrial site of the 13 colonies. Incorporated in 1815, the town was originally called Greenbush due to the numerous pine trees. East Albany was also part of the village and soon became an important center of railroad activity. The village continued to grow, and in 1897 became the City of Rensselaer, named after Kiliaen Van Rensselaer. The city is also often referred to as the "Home of Yankee Doodle" as several verses of the famous song were written here. The city's location on the Hudson River drew many industries, including shipping, chemical production, ice harvesting, and dye and felt making. The Bayer Company also opened America's first factory to manufacture aspirin in Rensselaer. Toward the end of the 20th century, most manufacturing come to a close, and some old buildings became offices for New York State government. At the same time, new industry arrived, and the city continued to function as a rail center as well as a bedroom community for the state capital. As the city's growth continued, it was supported by important institutions such as fire companies and schools. Today, Rensselaer continues to thrive as its historic charm draws visitors and residents alike.
