After Global Warming devastates the modern world, life reverts to the Dark Ages. THE PURPOSE, the descendant of a major computer maker, like, e.g. to IBM or HP, becomes a Church, with the manuals of computing as Canon. It believes the Golden Age will be restored when there is knowledge of computing among the people. But some believe the vision of The Founder has been lost. Three dissenters at the Institute where Canon is taught think they should not follow the path of their ancestors but find a way to a true renaissance. It is a dangerous idea. Dismissal from THE PURPOSE means auto da fe. Their resistance leads them to leave their jobs fall into a series of dangerous encounters and threats from governments, peasants, and THE PURPOSE.
