In the summer of 1857, United States' President James Buchanan sent 2500 soldiers to escort the new Utah Territorial Governor to take his new post. The army's task was two fold: first, to ensure the transfer of power between the new governor, Alfred Cumming, and the old, Brigham Young. The second, to put down the rebellion purported by the Federal Runaway Officials. Patrick O'Bannon and his four mates immigrated to America and joined the army just as the US Government was gathering forces to march on Utah.
