With summer over, the dreaded middle school Tommy wanted no part of is now a reality in his life, a place so much larger than his elementary school, containing far too many kids to make fun of him, as his imagination leads to episodes he can't completely stop having. The one and only good thing he can think of about this situation is he will get to see Salmon at times during the day, a true friend. The only person he is able to be himself with, unjudged. Someone who can get through to him when no one else can. Changes happen in his life whether he wants them to or not, good and bad. Good: being part of an after-school club, finding out some teachers aren't so bad, taking a girl to his first dance. Bad: worry involving the worst-case scenario of a sick friend, fear of a brute he can't rid himself of, a familiar routine coming to an end. Rearranging their lives, they find the light house to be a enjoyable place for friends to spend time together, learning new hobbies to replace the old.
