"Gynt" is a story of true love, lust, monsters and messengers from the hereafter. The play begins in the Norway of 1895 and Act II starts in 1915 Arabia. Our hero is Peer Gynt who, according to his mother Aase, is a lazy good-for-nothing storyteller and liar. He is also a bit of a ruffian, a carouser and a dreamer. His true love is Solveig but he definitely has lust in his heart for Ingrid, the Woman in Green and the slave girl Anitra. Are the monsters that Peer encounters real or merely figments of his overactive imagination? There are mountain trolls, long-dead mummies and a deadly mist called the Boyg. The Strange Passenger and the Candle Maker both have plans for Peer once he has passed on but, before he does, we finally get the answer to the philosophical question, "What does it mean to be happy with yourself?" "Gynt" is based on characters created by Henrik Ibsen for his classic five-act play "Peer Gynt." This adaptation is a fast-paced two acts and can be performed with a minimal set and an ensemble cast as small as fifteen.
