The family dog Eubie discovers and abandoned swaddling in a citrus grove. This discovery sets up the first of many mysteries. Is the baby alive, a boy or a girl and who left her there? When no one claims the infant and the county looks for a foster home the discovering family after much soul searching give the child a home. Esperanza or Hope is mature beyond her age and has a dog's nose for taking the right path. Each of her sucesses exposes her to events that might explain her unknown past. The events that follow bring new characters into the plot, each tangentially related to the swaddling. The author skillfully juggles the lives and hopes of the characters into a believable web of humanity.
