Jess is angry at the world. Her family doesn't spend time together anymore. Her brother is annoyingly good at everything. Her best friend is hanging out with a new crowd. After a humiliating photo of Jess is sent around Cape Henlopen High School-and the entire town of Lewes-her behavior goes from sullen adolescent to misbehaving teen. When her reckless behavior gets her caught up in a lie, her parents make her volunteer at Freedom Farm-an afterschool program where foster children take care of sick animals. Jess loathes the animals, the children, and the odors of the farm. But as she comes to learn more about the history of the volunteer program, she begins to find value in the rickety old farm and the people who make it their escape.
