Since it was first published 30 years ago, ONTHEBUS has become a nationally recognized literary journal that not only includes work from the members of the Los Angeles Poets & Writers Collective, but by poets & writers throughout the US, as well as translations of poetry from all over the world, not to mention book reviews, interviews, essays, literary criticism, art & photography. Over the years, ONTHEBUS has received numerous positive reviews: Green Mountain Review called ONTHEBUS "the finest looking magazine to appear in over a decade."The Los Angeles Times prasied it's "sheer unfettered and unpredictable range," while Small Press Magazine said it was "destined to be a major aftershock in American literary history."A London reviewer called it "the best new literary magazine currently published in America."Even Esquire noted that all one needed to do was check out ONTHEBUS to see "where the new writers were coming from." They went on to say: "Between the covers of ONTHEBUS are some of the most original and stimulating poetry, prose, opinions, artwork and photography, being created today."But after 30 years and 22 blockbuster issues, each one over 250 pages, I decided to close shop on ONTHEBUS and concentrate more on my teaching and my own books. About a month ago, over a bowl of gumbo, cornbread, and a robust cabernet sauvignon, I spoke to Bambi Here and Baz Here, editors and publishers of Bambaz Press, and we talked about continuing ONTHEBUS, with them as editors, and publishing it through the combined direction of Bombshelter and Bambaz press. Bambi and Baz are taking over as editors, and I will sit back in the penthouse board room and enjoy a fine cigar and a fine glass of cabernet sauvignon with my feet up on the conference table and enjoy the vista of the loading docks of the port of Los Angeles.
