The legendary Gold of Tolosa, pillaged by Romans from the Celts before mysteriously disappearing into the Alps, has remained shrouded in myth for two millennia. The death-bed gaspings of a dying derelict in a Mexican jail ignites the curiosity of the dying man's cell mate, Channing Fletcher, a Vietnam vet. The old man's final mumbled words hint at a fabulous treasure he stumbled upon in the Bavarian Alps during the waning days of WW II. Although skeptical, Fletcher is drawn in by the seductive story and, after a murder and a series of violent confrontations during his inquiries, becomes convinced of its substance and embarks upon a convoluted odyssey with a glittering reward at the end.
