This intriguing family saga / love story spanning over forty years begins when an unlikely friendship is formed between a delivery driver (Rory) and an elderly woman (Rhona). She reminds him of his grandma and she helps him come to terms with his past.

The reader is then transported back through Rhona`s life: her strange abusive husband, unexpected affair with a married man (Erick) and escape to a remote cottage in the West of Ireland, where she gives birth but has to give her baby away. Unable to stay there, she flees to Cornwall thinking she may never see her married lover or her baby again.

She then meets and falls in love with a handsome Welshman, but after suffering a double tragedy, her life spirals out of control and following her friend`s advice, she goes to a retreat in Kerala, India.

Meanwhile Erick`s life has also started to unravel. With his dreams of living self-sufficiently in Ireland with his family now shattered, he struggles on alone often thinking of Rhona and the baby they had to give away. Having returned to the UK he unexpectedly sees Rhona with her new man and they look very much in love. Trying to forget her, he quickly embarks on a relationship with a wild, unpredictable younger woman but later, finds himself alone again.

Rory lodges with Rhona after a bout of illness and discloses something shocking about his past.

After several strange twists of fate, the three main characters` paths become increasingly entwined and Rory uncovers an astonishing family secret that changes the course of their lives forever.
