McLachlan Professor of History and American Studies at Stanford University. His first book, "Birth Control in America: The Career of Margaret Sanger, " was honored with both the Bancroft Prize and the John Gilmary Shea Prize. He has won numerous teaching awards at Stanford and sits on its bookstore committee as well. He recently published a volume in the Oxford series of American history entitled "Freedom From Fear: The United States, 1929-1945, " which won the 2000 Pulitzer Prize for History.
