A careful reading of the Bible makes it clear that what we today consider the 'God of Israel' is the result of a manipulation by the priestly editors of the Torah, who have transformed Moses' Jehovah into a tribal God. Modern-day Israel - the Jewish State - continues to be plagued by its hesitation between the prophetic and tribal traditions. It is high time we recognize that the people of Israel did not exist at the time of Moses' birth; that Moses did not mean for them to be opposed to others; and that his message was one of universalist acceptance - not of particularist singlehood.
