Entomological Study of Vectors of Leishmaniasis: at Southern Part of Ethiopia, the Case of Negelle Borena

Visceral leishmaniasis (VL) is one of a major vector- borne disease and is known to be endemic in 62 countries, affecting an estimated 0.5 million cases per year worldwide and it is also a disease that mostly affects poor people living in remote areas, who have no access to health care facilities, while its diagnosis and treatment to date, can only be performed in selected hospital settings. Therefore, a cross- sectional study on entomological study of visceral leishmaniasis in Negelle Borena was conducted, from July through October, 2009. For the study, a total of 1,646 phlebotomine sand flies were collected using sticky paper and CDC light traps from indoors and outdoors. Among these 702 were Phlebotomus species (276 males and 426 females) and 944 were Sergentomyia species (326 males and 618 females).
