Oliver Goldsmith (Kilkenny West, Ireland, November 10, 1730 (?) - London, April 4, 1774) was an Irish writer and physician, best known for his novel The Vicar of Wakefield (1766 ), his pastoral poem The Deserted Village (1770) (written in memory of his brother), and his works The Good-natur'd Man (1768) and She Stoops to Conquer (1771), first represented in 1773). He is also believed to have written the classic children's tale The History of Little Goody Two Shoes. He belonged to the circle of Dr Samuel Johnson, who would always hold his work in high regard (he would go so far as to say "... no one writes like Goldsmith ...." in response to Horace Walpole, who called Goldsmith an inspired idiot because of his fame. riotous and dissolute that he had). Johnson is believed to have written and edited many of Goldsmith's poems. The son of an ecclesiastic, his father wanted him to pursue his profession, but Oliver's adventurous and carefree humor and his taste for the loose life made all attempts fail.
