A Dog's Tale by Mark Twain

A classic tale by Mark Twain depicting the life of a family seen through his canine companion. It is a unique take on how family members respond to calamity and the treatment of each member brought out by contrasting the dark and reckless nature of humans with the benign and loyal nature of dogs.

The story is told from the perspective of a dog named Aileen Mavourneen, a self-proclaimed Presbyterian, whose mother is a Collie, and the father is a St. Bernard. It starts with his life as a puppy while living with his mother. Eventually, she is taken from her mother to live in a loving family. At first, Aileen's life seems perfect. She lives in a spacious and decorated house with an open space where she is free to walk and play with other dogs.

All of that changes, however, when a fire breaks out in the nursery, prompting Aileen to risk her own life to save her owner's baby from danger. Despite her heroic act, Aileen's motives are poorly understood and she is cruelly beaten and treated with the utmost brutality that changes her life forever.

Recommended reading that evokes strong and heartfelt emotions throughout
