Barnaby Rudge was one of only two novels (the other being The Antique Shop) published by its author in his weekly owned Master Humphrey's Clock, which only appeared in the period 1840-41. Barnaby Rudge is set in the so-called Gordon Riots, anti-Catholic riots in England in 1780. Barnaby Rudge was the fifth of Dickens' novels to be published.
