Moby Dick (Annotated)
Herman Melville
Differentiated book- It has a historical context with research of the time-Herman Melville recounts in Moby Dick the crossing of the Pequod whaler in the self-destructive persecution of a great white whale. But, in reality, Moby Dick, who turns 161 today of his publication, is the constant search for an obsession. It illustrates the legendary sperm whale confused between the waves of the sea, the letters of the seeker and a wooden boat. A few weeks after the publication of Moby Dick, The Atheneum, in London, he wrote about this novel: "It is a mixture of novel and prosaism poorly combined." Herman Melville continued to live until the end of his existence (he wrote it at age 31 and died at 72) in the face of almost total indifference from the public and critics. His work would not begin to be known until 1924, when a scholar became interested in it and published his biography. As Conrad, Herman Melville met the sea live. Born in New York in 1919 in a family of wealthy merchants, his father, Allan, broke down and died when Herman Melville was very young and was studying at the Albany Academy. After several attempts to establish himself in several professions (among them a bank employee) and some sporadic work (he was in the farm of his uncle in Massachusetts), Herman Melville embarked, in January 1841, aboard a whaler, the Acushmet, which, he would say years later, was for him "my Yale and my Harvard."
