Marcus Phoenix leads the charge against the Locust Horde as they attempt to overrun planet Sera in this third person shooter.

Although using cover in an intense battle has often been implemented in action titles, Gear of War is one of the first to popularize the style and implement it fully into gameplay. Taking the role of Marcus, players can dive in and out of cover with the press of a button, sticking their backs to walls at a whim while peaking around the corner for a well-placed shot. Although the typical array of machine guns and pistols take their place here, a number of truly original firearms are also available, including the famed Lancer - a rifle with a chainsaw attached to the bottom.

Visually, few titles can claim to match the incredible detail and impact of Gears of Wars art style. The destroyed beauty and gothic charm of the games levels look outstanding, while giving the rubble and war torn streets a unique appeal. Multiplayer is also available online, with tight 4-on-4 battles taking place in close quarters designed around many of the single player levels.

Gears of War is an overwhelming and gory title - its visual impact and smooth cover system make it one of the Xbox 360s premier shooters.
