Cane Toads - The Conquest 3D

In 1935, Australians sugar cane plantations were sufferings huge losses due to a widespread infestation of the Greyback Cane Beetle, and in a bid to control the insects, farmers imported just over one hundred cane toads from Hawaii, believing the toads would eat the insects and save the crops. However, nothing went as hoped -- the toads wouldn't eat the beetles but they did reproduce at a rapid rate, and with no predators to control their numbers in Northeastern Australia, the large and ugly toads were soon unavoidable all across Queensland. Filmmaker Mark Lewis examined the strange story of Australia's leading invasive species in his 1988 documentary CANE TOADS: AN UNNATURAL HISTORY, and in 2009 he offered an update on this cautionary tale with CANE TOADS: THE CONQUEST. Shot using a digital 3-D process, CANE TOADS: THE CONQUEST chronicles the advance of the toads over two decades -- an estimated 1.5 billion cane toads can now be found in Australia, and all attempts to control their breeding have failed. While some Aussies have adopted the toads as a curious mascot, parts of the country are being decimated by their environmental impact, and the blunder of the cane toad epidemic is beginning to be felt outside Australia.
