“What'd I Say” from 1959 was Ray Charles' first gold record: With this magnificent album, he made it into the Top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100 and reached number 6. Upon its release, a Billboard reviewer described “What'd I Say” as “a great, swinging album” and wrote that Charles was “at his best here.” His sixth album for Atlantic Records since his debut album “Ray Charles” (1957) was not a classic studio album, but rather a compilation of previously unreleased material.
