Bill Evans was deeply shaken by the death of the young double-bass prodigy Scott LaFaro (who died in a car accident in the summer of 1961 at the age of just 24) and fell into a deep depression. The magical chemistry of the extraordinary trio, completed by Paul Motian on drums, had been shattered in the most sudden and tragic way, and the great pianist had slipped into a drug addiction from which there was no escape for him.
