Folk meets Jazz and World Music. Sudden Light is a combination of outstanding musicians coming together. With impressive creativity, Bob uses resourceful and innovative stylings on mandolin, acoustic and electric guitar and performs a wide blend of original music. Guitarist Randy Roos, cellist Mick Fritzsching, bassist David Saltman, keyboardist Jeanne Ricks and percussionist Jerry Leake fill out this perceptive project whose sounds reflect the visual images of Bob's compositions and paintings. Born north of Boston, Massachusetts, Bob began his musical career in New York and Boston/Cambridge area coffeehouses and college concerts in the late 1960s. In addition to his solo career, he has shared the stage with founding member of the Jefferson Airplane, Jorma Kaukonen, Bonnie Raitt, The Everly Brothers, Pentangle, Tim Hardin, John Prine, Neil Young, Buddy Miles, Taj Mahal, Dion, Leo Kottke, Livingston Taylor, Steve Goodman, Jay Leno, Jerry Jeff Walker, and many others. As a free-lance guitarist and mandolinist, he has performed on stage with Tommy Makem, Nanci Griffith, Larry Coryell, Mary Travers, and Tom and Harry Chapin, among others. He has appeared on recordings with Columbia artists John Compton of Appaloosa, Andy Pratt, Eugene Friesen of the Paul Winter Consort and Bill Staines. Quoting from the entertainment newspaper, Variety, of his solo performance at the legendary Greenwich Village folk club, Gerde's Folk City, 'His work on six-string acoustic guitar stands out in jazz instrumentals. . . . McCarthy seems unhampered by delivering solo stylings usually associated with combos." Kirb. VARIETY.
