Brussels-based 22-year-old DC Salas recently released his debut single, “Peru”, named after his home country. That Doctor Vinyl release, with its remixes by Dave DK and Mugwump, was quite a success for his first effort, getting support from DJs like Luciano, Tiga and Ewan Pearson. Now, with the E. V. O. L. EP, our little sonic youth teams up with the Toys For Boys label and expands his sound into three original tracks. “E. V. O. L.” is “LOVE” spelled backwards, and it’s not quite “EVIL”, but its upbeat strut does dip its toes in dark waters. The swingy tribal groove is meant to get your feet moving, while the jazz-tinged crime drama melody might put evil thoughts in your head, and before you know it, you’ll find yourself committing dancefloor arson! (It’s OK, the fire extinguisher is kept right behind the DJ booth.) And although he’s young, Diego Cortez Salas summons an old-school vibe, combining housey organ, a laid-back fuzzy bassline and samples of spoken word and skipping vinyl. Finally with “Rutabaga”, he takes things much deeper (fittingly, as the titular vegetable grows underground), offering a moment of hypnotic atmospherics. Keep your eyes and ears to this upcoming producer and of course to Toys For Boys as well!
